Hemis Monastery : The hidden jewel of the himalayas


Tucked away in the rugged landscape of ladakh, Hemis monastery stands as a majestic symbol of tibetan buddhist heritage. Located about 45km from Leh, this ancient monastery is not just a spritual center but also a cultural treasure that transport you to a different world.

A Glimpse into History 

Hemis monastery was established in the 17th century by king singey namgyal and belongs to the Drukpa Lineage of tibetan buddhism. Over the centuries it has grown into the largest and wealthiest monastery in Ladakh. The aura here is a blend of serene spritual energy and centuries old tradition.

Architectural Marvel

The monastery architecture is a beautiful fusion of tibetan and indian styles. Whitewashed walls intricately carved woodwork, and colorful frescoes depict stories from buddhist scriptures. Inside you'll find a stunning assembly hall (Dukhang) sacred thankas ( Tibetan painting) a 12mtr tall statue of Guru Padmasambava, and an extensive library with ancient texts.


Hemis Festival - A Riot of colors

The monastery truly comes alive during the Hemis Festival, held anually in june or july. Monks in elaborate costumes and masks perform Cham dances that reenact the triumph of good over evil. The atmosphere is electric music, prayer chants, and the whirl of silk robes create an unforgatable experience.

When not bustling with festivities, Hemis is a place of deep silence. The surrounding landscape rugged mountains, whispering winds, and cloud brushed skies makes it an ideal spot for meditation and reflection. Visitors often leave with a sense of peace and awe.
